According to the American Cancer Society ...

  • There were approximately 28,000 new cancer diagnoses made in Washington state residents in 2006, and a total of 1,399,790 throughout the USA.
  • While survival rates have been going up, there are still some 1,500 Americans dying daily of cancer, which accounts for one in every four deaths in our nation.
  • Three-quarters of all cancers are diagnosed in persons 55 and older.
  • The lifetime risk of developing cancer is about one-in-two for men, and one-in-three for women.
  • Cancer is "a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells."
  • Many cancers are entirely preventable, such as all those caused by cigarette smoking and heavy use of alcohol.
  • Many others could be prevented by lifestyle changes, being more health-conscience in choices about diet, exercise, sun exposure, drug and sexual practices.
  • Only 5 to 10 percent of cancers are hereditary, but knowing one's family health history is important information to share with a primary care physician.
